2009 Brought Troy Acoustics Many Challenging Moments

2009 brought many challenges to Troy Acoustics. In addition to moving to more expansive headquarters in Santa Clarita, Troy employed a professional engineer who specializes in highway noise barriers. These barriers, which have been modified to have ballistic capabilities, are more cost effective than CMU concrete filled walls or tilt up concrete with additional acoustic material for use in outdoor shooting ranges. With urban sprawl, more and more outdoor ranges are being cited by "concerned citizens" who are worried about the value of their homes depreciating due to noise, or just don't like the noise, and use that as a reason to have the range shut down or limit their hours.

Noise cut in half at outdoor range

A county outdoor range required an economical acoustic solution to ensure a 3 dB noise reduction or risk continued reduced hours or closure. Their range had been there for over 30 years. However, the addition of a new trap and sidewalls and changes in training schedules, resulted in excessive noise levels. In the end, when the range was treated with the Troy engineered site specific solution, and tested by an independent acoustician hired by the County, there was a 10 dB reduction. That translates to half the noise level. Not only was the county pleased, neighboring homes can now experience quieter noise levels.

By Firefighter/Paramedic Larry Hogueisson

Coronado: On November 18-20 San Miguel Fire brought its Fire Blast training trailer down to Coronado to provide a multi-agency live fire training opportunity at Coronado Station 37 in the Coronado Cays. Fire Chief Augie Ghio obtained the trailer through a county grant in 2008. In addition to the Coronado training, the trailer has been used for other events including the Heartland 19th fire academy, fire training at Viejas, and multiple Hazmat trainings at the Heartland Training Facility.

The Coronado Cays training was led by seven instructors from San Miguel and Coronado Fire. The instructors included Captains Justin Fuller, Andy Lawler, Kurt Fryling, and Ron Quinlan, Engineers Dave Pietrczak and Rich Durrell from San Miguel. In addition, Captain Jim Blinn from Coronado was an instructor for all three days. Each day consisted of the instructors taking crews through four live fire-training drills. Crews were assigned a variety of tasks including ...
